Herculaneum Shot Tower
Military
11
The first shot tower west of Pittsburgh was erected in 1809 at the top of this cliff. Shot made by dropping molten lead from it and bullets molded from lead smelted nearby were used by American troops during the War of 1812, notably at the decisive victory of January 8, 1815, the Battle of New Orleans. In 1926, this tablet and its site were presented by the St. Joseph Lead Company to the United States Daughters of 1812. The plaque was relocated and rededicated March 22, 2015.
