A legislative act of 1795 granted 200 acres to each settler in the Green River country, drawing many people from the Carolinas. Among them were Baptists, including two preachers, who constituted Union Church in 1795. John Hightower, the first pastor, served until 1813. The meeting house was shared with other denominations. Services continued through the Civil War while most did not. The present building was erected in 1866.
