Sterling Heights Police Officer Leroy H. Imus, Badge Number 21, was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver during a traffic stop on the M-53 Expressway on Dec. 2, 1971, at age 32. A devoted family man, he left behind a wife and four young children. Imus was a U.S. Navy veteran and decorated officer who earned multiple service awards and was well liked by his fellow officers. His sacrifice for the residents of Sterling Heights was honored when City Council passed a resolution on January 18, 1972 dedicating a 10-acre park as Leroy Imus Park in his honor.
