Hunter Peak is an 8,376-foot limestone summit in the Guadalupe Mountains of West Texas, within Guadalupe Mountains National Park. Rising sharply above Pine Spring Canyon, it is among the highest peaks in both the range and the state, and reflects the region’s origins as an ancient Permian reef. Its eastern slopes drain toward the Delaware River, and its heights support ponderosa pine, southwestern white pine, Douglas-fir, and juniper, an unusual mix for this arid landscape. Officially named in 1966 for Jessie Coleman “J.C.” Hunter, a major landowner and early advocate for the park, the peak honors his role in preserving the Guadalupe Mountains in an undeveloped condition.
