Guadalupe Peak, also called Signal Peak, is the highest natural point in Texas at 8,751 feet above sea level, rising more than 3,000 feet from the Chihuahuan Desert in Guadalupe Mountains National Park. Its unusual prominence and nearly 9,000-foot elevation create mountain conditions and hazards rare in the state, making the 8.4-mile round-trip trail to the summit a very strenuous climb. A stainless steel pyramid placed on the summit in 1958 marks the centennial of the Butterfield Overland Mail route that passed south of the mountain. As a signature landmark of the park, it stands as both Texas’s highest point and a powerful symbol of the far western landscape.
