Nichols Arboretum, the Arb, is a 128-acre botanical landscape on the University of Michigan campus beside the Huron River, where designed gardens, woodland, wetlands, and meadow preserve part of Ann Arbor’s older terrain. Evolving from Schoolgirls' Glen and adjoining farmland donated in 1906 by Esther Connor Nichols and Walter Nichols, it opened in 1907 and was shaped by landscape gardener O. C. Simonds to follow the natural topography. After plans for a botanical garden shifted elsewhere, the site became Nichols Arboretum in 1922. Its most celebrated feature is the W. E. Upjohn Peony Garden, and today the Arb remains a major public landscape, plant collection, and educational setting.
