In Montrose, Colorado, this history museum is devoted to the Ute people and stands on the 8.65-acre homestead of Chief Ouray and his wife, Chipeta, two of the best-known Ute leaders in western Colorado. Administered by History Colorado, the site combines museum exhibits with a historic landscape that includes Chief Ouray Memorial Park, Chipeta’s Crypt, and a garden of native plants. Built in 1956 and expanded in 1998 and 2017, it links the broader story of the Ute tribe with the lives of Ouray and Chipeta and remains an important public place for interpreting Ute history in Montrose.
