During February 17-19, 1865, General P.G.T. Beauregard made his headquarters here while Wade Hampton's cavalry acted as rear guard. He telegraphed General R.E. Lee in Virginia with news of the evacuation of Columbia, 20 miles south, before retiring to Winnsboro. Union troops, following and destroying the railroad, arrived February 21.
