The Saturn I, Saturn IB, and Saturn V were members of the Saturn family of rockets developed in Huntsville. The Saturn IB had more power than the earlier Saturn I, enough for orbital training missions with both the Apollo spacecraft and lunar module. The 363-foot Saturn V ultimately took American astronauts out of Earth’s orbit and on to the moon. One of only three remaining original Saturn V rockets, along with a full-scale vertical replica, can be seen at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center a few miles south in Huntsville. Listed as a National Historic Landmark, the Saturn V represents one of the greatest scientific achievements in human history, and with a 100 percent success rate it was responsible for putting 12 American astronauts on the surface of the moon.
