The Tompkins-Brindler Mound Group in Woodland Park in Monona, Wisconsin, is a Native American archaeological site preserving two surviving linear mounds about 200 and 210 feet long from what was once a much larger earthwork complex. These mounds were built during the Late Woodland period, roughly 500 to 1200 A.D., when many of southern Wisconsin’s earthen mounds were constructed. Though the exact purpose of linear mounds is uncertain, they are generally understood to have held religious or spiritual importance for Late Woodland communities. The broader group once included fifteen mounds and a related cluster nearby, but those other earthworks were destroyed.
