The Monona Mound
History
7
The Monona Mound is believed to have been built by the ancestors of the Ho-Chunk between AD 700 and 1100. The long tapering mound is often interpreted as an abstract turtle or water spirit. In 1988, due to the efforts of many local groups, this mound was the first cataloged for protection under Wisconsin's burial sites protection law.
