Witch Tree, or Manidoo-giizhikens, is an ancient eastern white cedar growing from bare rock on the shore of Lake Superior in northeastern Minnesota. Known as Little Cedar Spirit Tree to the Ojibwe, it is a sacred cultural site centered on a single living tree rather than an ordinary protected scenic area. Already described as mature in 1731 by Sieur de la Verendrye, it is more than 300 years old. Its small, gnarled form reflects the harsh lakeshore environment, while its spiritual importance is tied to Ojibwe offerings of tobacco for safe journeys on Lake Superior. Because of its religious significance and past vandalism, access is restricted.
