Mount Josephine
Nature
Mount Josephine is a peak in Minnesota’s Sawtooth Mountains that rises above Grand Portage Bay on Lake Superior, making it a notable landmark along the rugged North Shore. Its recorded name dates to an 1853 excursion when Josephine Godfrey of Detroit led a group of young friends from Grand Portage to the summit for a daylong outing. She was the daughter of John Godfrey, who owned a trading post at the present site of Grand Marais until 1858. The mountain is remembered chiefly for this early local story and for its commanding setting above one of Lake Superior’s striking bays.
