Grass Hills was the home and family cemetery of Lewis Sanders, 1781-1861. The house was built in 1819 on land his wife inherited from Col. George Nicholas, a key drafter of the Kentucky Constitution and the first state Attorney General. In 1816 Sanders organized the first Kentucky fair on his farm in Fayette County. In 1817, with Henry Clay, he made the first importation of shorthorn cattle from England west of the Alleghenies.
