Ubehebe Peak is a double-summit mountain in Death Valley National Park that rises 5,678 feet above Racetrack Playa, giving it a commanding place in one of the park’s starkest and most isolated settings. Located at the south end of the Last Chance Range, it can be approached by Racetrack Valley Road and climbed by an old miner’s trail to the saddle between its summits. Its name, likely from the Paiute people of the Inyo region, probably derives from a term meaning “woman’s breasts,” reflecting its paired shape. The mountain and surrounding area also contain varied rock formations and mineral deposits, though local copper proved unprofitable while lead mining was more successful in the early 20th century.
