The Baumgartner House 1875
Arts & Culture
2
The Baumgartner House was the home of John and Samantha Baumgartner. John came to America from Bavaria. The house is notable for its Rundbogenstil architecture, or round arched windows. The style was popular in Germany between 1840 and 1850, and German immigrants who came to America in the 1850's copied the style here. Rundbogenstil architecture requires that a house be brick and square or almost square, with round-arched windows and corbeling around the windows. Because the historical period was brief, the style is very special and very rare, and there are very few houses in Michigan of this style.
