Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1954 and completed in 1956, the Gerald B. and Beverley Tonkens House in Amberley, Ohio, is among the finest and most intact examples of his Usonian Automatic architecture. Commissioned by Gerald B. Tonkens after he and his family moved to the Cincinnati area, it rose on a steep, difficult site that Wright turned into part of the design challenge. Built with interlocking precast concrete blocks, extensive glazing, and carefully scaled interior spaces, the house reflects Wright’s late effort to create modular modern housing. Despite costly construction and later restoration, it remains the only largely unaltered Wright house in Greater Cincinnati.
