Reuben Creel, a Greensburg native, was appointed by Lincoln as U.S. consul to Chihuahua, Mexico, in 1863 and served until 1866. He had gone to Mexico with Gen. Ward, another Greensburg native, during the Mexican War and served as his interpreter, then remained there after the war. His early home stood here. His son Enrique C. Creel, born in Mexico in 1854, became a wealthy banker, a member of the Mexican National Congress from 1898 to 1904, ambassador from Mexico to the U.S. from 1907 to 1909, governor of Chihuahua, official interpreter at the meeting of Pres. Taft and Mexican Pres. Diaz in 1912, and Minister of Foreign Affair until the Revolution of 1913, when his property was confiscated and he fled to the U.S. He died in Mexico in 1931.
