On July 4, 1863, Morgan's raiders, on their way to Ohio, approached 200 USA Michigan Infantry under Colonel O. H. Moore entrenched here and demanded surrender. Moore replied that the Fourth of July was no day to entertain such a proposition. In a three-hour battle, eight CSA assaults were repulsed, with 36 CSA killed and 45 wounded, while 6 USA were killed and 23 wounded. After a significant delay, Morgan bypassed the position and moved on.
