This house, a fine example of chronological and architectural house development, was the 1692 home of Sarah Holton, who gave damaging testimony against Rebecca Nurse during the witchcraft hysteria. During the Revolutionary period it was home to Samuel Holten, a physician, statesman, and judge who served in the Provincial Congress of 1774-75, on the Committee of Safety, and in the Continental Congress from 1778-80 and 1782-87, including as temporary president in 1785. He signed the Articles of Confederation, served as a judge for over 30 years, was a member of the early U.S. Congress, and held numerous other town, state, and federal positions, emulating the ideal of the 18th century enlightened man.
