Built around 1670 in Danvers, Massachusetts, the Judge Samuel Holten House began as a typical one-room dwelling and was enlarged over generations, reflecting continuous use by the Holten family until the Civil War era. Its roots reach back to land first held by Richard Ingersoll and later passed through Sarah Holten and Benjamin Holten, who is generally believed to have built the house. The home is tied to major chapters of early American history: in 1692 Sarah Holten gave testimony against Rebecca Nurse during the Salem witch trials, and during the Revolutionary War it was home to Judge Samuel Holten, a Founding Father, Continental Congress leader, signer of the Articles of Confederation, and U.S. representative.
