Cleveland Barrens Natural Area Preserve
Nature
Cleveland Barrens Natural Area Preserve is a 1,288-acre protected area in the Clinch River Valley of southwestern Virginia, established to protect a series of dolomite barrens, a globally rare natural community within an otherwise forested landscape. These natural openings lie on steep, southwest-facing slopes, where thin calcareous soils, dry conditions, and exposed limestone or dolomite create habitat distinct from the surrounding woods. Four openings support warm-season grasses such as indiangrass, big bluestem, and little bluestem. The preserve also sustains an unusual concentration of uncommon species, including thirteen rare plants and three rare insects, and remains largely undeveloped for conservation.
