Cuewe-Pehelle, later called Quittapahilla, is an Algonquin name meaning "a stream that flows from the ground among the pines." The stream significantly shaped the Lebanon Valley naturally. Inspired by the valley's nature and by the peaceful and productive relations between native peoples and settlers, artist Audrey Flack created Cuewe-Pehelle to represent a spirit of openness and welcome that bestowed the valley's abundance. Lebanon Valley College, seen as a product of this spirit, dedicated Cuewe-Pehelle and designated Carmean Plaza in honor of D. Clark Carmean, L.H.D., and Edna J. Carmean '59, L.H.D., whose generosity and service strengthened the college and its students through seven decades.
