The Sandstone school once stood on this site, continuing an educational tradition later echoed by the Sandstone Visitor Center. It opened in 1925 as Green Sulphur District School and taught grades one through nine, and its first graduating class in 1929 consisted of ten students. Through 1971, more than 900 students began first grade education and graduated high school on this site. The school later became known as Sandstone Elementary and High School, and after consolidation it continued teaching elementary and junior high classes. Following the decision to close the school, the last student attended in 1994. The school also included a vocational-agriculture annex for vocational training, a gymnasium for physical education and basketball, and a football field, and its alumni, known as the Hornets, have remained strongly loyal to their old school and regularly hold reunions attended by former students from all classes.
