Point Vicente Lighthouse was built in 1926 on the Palos Verdes Peninsula to help guide ships safely toward the Los Angeles and Long Beach harbors after long concern over dangerous nearby waters. Its 67-foot white tower stands atop a cliff high above the ocean and was equipped with a powerful third-order Fresnel lens first made in 1886 and previously used in Alaska. Operated first by the United States Lighthouse Service and later the U.S. Coast Guard, the station was dimmed during World War II, automated in 1971, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. It remains a federal Coast Guard site with limited public access.
