Four miles east in Warren County, Mississippi, Davis Island was the site of Briarfield Plantation, owned by Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederacy, and Hurricane Plantation, owned by his older brother Joseph Davis. Both homes were occupied by Union troops in 1863.
