Shackleford is a ceremonial site with four mounds that date to about A.D. 800. Three of the mounds are three feet tall or less. However, the large platform mound is over thirteen feet tall and is the best-preserved part of the site. It was constructed in several episodes on top of a prepared surface of sand.
