Nearby Alikchi Springs was the court ground for the Apukshunnubbee District of the Choctaw Nation from 1838 to 1906, where justice was dispensed for major crimes committed by Choctaws, including capital punishment. The last legal execution under Choctaw law was carried out here on July 13, 1899, when William Goings was executed for murder by sheriff Tom Watson before hundreds of witnesses. Alikchi is a Choctaw word for Medicine Man, which currently refers to a medical doctor.
