Felker Army Airfield, the world's first military heliport, was dedicated on December 7, 1954, at ceremonies attended by aviation pioneer Igor Sikorsky and MGs Rush B. Lincoln and Paul F. Yount. The basic plan of its unique circular landing pad for helicopters was originated by LTG (then Col) Wm. B. Bunker in 1949. Anticipating the role of the TC in Army Aviation, the $1,000,000 facility is a memorial to Warrant Officer Alfred C. Felker, Army Aviator.
