Built in 1847 by Major Pierson Barton Reading, who crossed the plains in 1843 and received Rancho Buena Ventura, the northernmost Mexican grant, in 1844, this site became the first county seat in 1850, when Shasta included other counties. Reading discovered gold at Clear Creek in March 1848 and at Reading Bar in July 1848.
