A hotel has occupied this site for over 150 years. Around 1865, Isaac Marker built the Golden Eagle House on the site occupied today by the Inn at Versailles. Harrison Brandon purchased the hotel in 1872 and renamed it the Brandon House. When Brandon died a few years later, his widow Margaret married Frank Snyder, and the hotel became the Snyder House. In 1901-1902, a devastating fire destroyed the hotel along with six business blocks and 38 residences in the heart of the village, and it was immediately rebuilt as the Hotel Snyder. In 1909, George H. and Amelia Worch purchased the hotel, and Allen Wilson managed it until 1929, followed by James and Bertha Beare, who also operated a restaurant on site. From 1945 to 1975, Ross Ward, longtime owner of Ward Drug Store, owned the hotel, which became the Ward Hotel, while the Beares continued as managers until 1950. From 1976 to 1992, Carl Subler Trucking and others purchased the hotel and adjoining properties, and after a complete remodel it opened as The Versailles Hotel. In 1992, Renaissance Corp, a subsidiary of Midmark, purchased the hotel and adjoining properties and carried out an extensive remodel. In 1993, the Inn at Versailles opened to the public with 23 suites and rooms on the second floor. After the 1901 fire, several businesses occupied buildings that later became part of the inn: Peschke's Hardware on North Center; Ward Drug Store at Main and Center; W. C. Beare's Grocery Store next door on Main; and Beare's Coffee Shop in the back. Today those businesses and buildings comprise the inn's first floor, including the Versailles and Lorraine Banquet Rooms, the Alsace Dining Room, the hotel lobby, and in the back, the food preparation area of Michael Anthony's.
