Winterplace Ski Resort in Ghent, West Virginia, opened in 1983 on Flat Top Mountain and became a major draw because of its easy access from Interstate 77, attracting visitors from the Carolinas, Virginia, and West Virginia. On the northern slope of Huff Knob, it offers 90 acres of skiable terrain, 28 trails, nine lifts, a terrain park, and a prominent snow tubing operation. Its tubing park is described as the largest in West Virginia and has received national recognition. The area’s ski history reaches back to Bald Knob Ski Slopes, a nearby resort that operated from 1958 to 1961 before the present resort was developed on Huff Knob.
