Established in the late 1870s by H. B. Sanborn, a major promoter of barbed wire, this showplace ranch was the first large area in Texas to be fenced with barbed wire, serving as a model demonstration project that contributed to the decline of the open-range West. In 1888, Sanborn founded the city of Amarillo and thereafter sold the ranch.
