Mount McGregor in Saratoga County, New York, is a principal peak of the Palmertown Range and was first known as Palmertown Mountain, named for Native Americans who came to the area after King Philip's War. Renamed for Duncan McGregor, it developed from a mountain hotel and fishing lakes into a larger resort under Joseph William Drexel and his railroad. Its most famous historical moment came in 1885, when Ulysses S. Grant spent his final six weeks there finishing his memoirs in Drexel's cottage. In the 20th century, the mountain became a sanitarium, then a veterans' facility, later a developmental center, and finally a prison before parts were preserved, opened for recreation, and considered for redevelopment.
