Ulysses S. Grant died at this cottage on July 23rd, 1885. He had been General of the U.S.A. from 1866 to 1869 and President of the U.S. from 1869 to 1877, and was associated with the words, “Let us have peace.” A legacy of commitment to Grant Cottage included the Mt. McGregor Memorial Association, Inc., from 1889 to 1957; Civil War Union veterans of the Grand Army of the Republic; Oliver Pendleton Clark, Sgt., Co. B, 94th New York Infantry, an Andersonville survivor who was first caretaker from 1890 to 1917; Martha Josephine Kelsey Clarke, wife of Oliver, who was second caretaker from 1917 to 1941; and the Friends of the Ulysses S. Grant Cottage, Inc., formed September 18, 1989.
