The Murie Ranch, a National Historic Landmark, was home to the Muries, whose conservation work laid the foundation for Congress to protect American wilderness as sanctuaries where no permanent human development exists. Olaus and Adolph Murie’s research changed understanding of how animals and their environment interact, and their pioneering scientific work transformed the field of ecology. Adolph’s groundbreaking work helped move science toward holistic management of ecosystems rather than the management of individual species. The ranch also became a base camp for discussion and debate among conservation leaders striving to protect wilderness, and through science, art, and writing, the Muries inspired visitors and others to become advocates for protecting wild places. Mardy Murie, Olaus’ wife, lived here until her death and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998, the highest civilian honor in the United States.
