The Borough of Helmetta was incorporated in 1888. The George W. Helme Snuff Mill Historic District was listed on the State Register of Historic Places on February 1, 1980, and on the National Register of Historic Places on August 15, 1980. The Helmetta Historical Society was established in 1994.
