Mary McLeod Bethune was the founder and president of Bethune Cookman College in Dayton Beach, Florida, from 1904 to 1942, founder and president of the National Council of Negro Women, an advisor to four United States presidents—Calvin Cooledge, Herbert Hoover, Franklin Roosevelt, and Harry S. Truman—and director of the National Youth Administration. She was also a representative to the organizational meeting of the United Nations in 1945, and was known as an educator, humanitarian, founder, organizer, and civil rights activist, and as the daughter of Sam and Patsy McLeod.
