Delaware Breakwater East End Light, just off Cape Henlopen near Lewes, was commissioned in 1884 to replace the failing Cape Henlopen Beacon and guide vessels along a busy approach to Delaware Bay. Its iron tower was completed in 1885, with a fog signal, wharf, and oil house added soon after. Fitted with a fourth-order Fresnel lens and a red warning sector for Hen and Chickens Shoal, it also became the breakwater’s front range light after 1903. Automated in 1950 and discontinued in 1996, it later passed to the State of Delaware and became part of the region’s preserved maritime heritage.
