The Village of Danburg was settled circa 1825 by Samuel Danforth of Vermont and Massachusetts at the intersection of two important trade routes, the Augusta Road into North Georgia and the Abbeville, S.C. Milledgeville GA Road, and was originally named Danforthtown. Early families included the Andersons, Danforths, McLendons, Reabs, Shumates, Stathams, Suttons, Waltons, and Wheatleys, who quickly created an atmosphere of education and cultural refinement that long made the village a noted regional social center. The village is also associated with remembrance of the Loyalists of 1776, who were loyal to the British Crown, British Constitution, and the Church of England and were driven by violence to take up defensive arms, join the Revolutionary cause, or depart; of antebellum and Confederate leaders from 1800 to 1865, whose civil and military leadership is praised while slavery is called unjust; of veterans of the 1914-1918 and 1939-1945 wars, when men from the village served with American contingents aiding Great Britain and France; of veterans of the 1950-1953 Korean War and the 1965-1973 Vietnam War; and of the village's Black citizens, who endured servitude until 1865 and then a cotton tenant farming system that exploited both Black and white citizens through 1945.
