Fish Springs National Wildlife Refuge is a rare desert wetland oasis at the southern end of Utah’s Great Salt Lake Desert, sustained by several natural springs along the base of the Fish Springs Range. Once a Pony Express and Overland Stage station, it took its name from fish in the springs that are remnants of ancient Lake Bonneville, which receded about 14,000 years ago. The warm, highly saline spring water supports wetlands that shelter migratory birds, fish, deer, coyotes, pronghorn, cougars, and other native wildlife. Its unusually large spring flow, monitored with nearby wells, makes Fish Springs both an important protected habitat and a place for permitted recreation.
