Adam Kellar began constructing a stone mill race on Sand Creek in 1813 and opened a grist mill in 1823. The mill became important to the local economy and helped spur development, with a state road to the mill established in 1834 and Brewersville founded in 1837. Flatboats carried the mill's products as far as New Orleans. The mill closed after damage in the 1937 flood.
