St. Philip's Church at Brunswick Town is a roofless Anglican ruin beside the Cape Fear River and one of the strongest surviving links to the colonial town that once stood there. St. Philip's Parish was established in 1741, and the brick church, built between 1754 and 1768, was esteemed as one of the colony's finest religious buildings. Fire in 1776, during the British attack on Brunswick Town in the American Revolutionary War, destroyed its roof and interior but left the main walls standing. The site later lay near Fort Anderson during the Civil War, where Union cannon fire left visible scars, and it also contains notable burials and archaeological remains.
