Fort Anderson was begun in 1861 and named in honor of General Joseph R. Anderson, then commanding the military district. Under the command of Brigadier General Johnson Hagood, the fort suffered a severe bombardment by a Federal fleet and an attack by a Federal army under Major General J. M. Schofield in February 1865, and it was evacuated.
