Jesse James, a celebrated Missouri outlaw of 1860s-82, visited Archer City and stayed in a house built by the Stone Land and Cattle Company for its manager, Allen H. Parmer, his Confederate comrade in the Civil War and the husband of his sister Susan. With his brother and aide Frank James, he hid at the Parmers' home when pursued for train and bank robberies and on other occasions. Jesse James was killed in 1882, and Frank and his wife continued to visit the Parmer house after his death. The house was later moved from its original site, and Parmer raised a family of respected, upright citizens.
