Mount Adams, a 3,520-foot mountain in Essex County, New York, is notable for its historic fire observation station. Fire observation began there in 1912 with a wooden tower, replaced in 1917 by a 47-foot steel Aermotor LS40 tower that served until lookout operations ended after the 1971 season. An observer’s cabin built in 1922 stands nearby as New York’s oldest surviving cabin of its kind and an early standard-design example. In the 2000s, preservationists and state officials kept the tower and cabin from removal during a large land transfer, enabling restoration and securing the site’s place in Adirondack forest history.
