Rev. David Rice, born in Va. in 1733, founded the first Presbyterian churches west of the Alleghanies in 1784. After founding Rice’s School, or Transylvania Seminary, near Danville, Ky. in 1785, he moved to Danville in 1788. He was a member of the State Constitutional Convention in 1792 and urged gradual emancipation. He came here in 1798 and formed two churches in this area. He died at age 83.
