Men and women from the Shamokin and Coal Township area who made the supreme sacrifice in service to their country are honored, including Gold Star Mothers and service members from the Civil War to the War on Terrorism. Those recognized include Congressional Medal of Honor recipients Pvt James M. Seitzinger and S/Sgt Freeman V. Horner; Distinguished Service Cross recipients PFC Charles Oldynski, PVT Benjamin G. Stankunos, Orville Hardy Jr., Maj William G. Benn, and Sgt Edward A. Patynski; Navy Cross recipients Albert A. Francovich, for whom the U.S.S. Francovich was named, and Adm Evan Peter Aurand; and Distinguished Service Medal recipients Gunners Mate Frank S. Pincoski and General C. Robert Kehler. The tribute also honors Robert J. Marcavage, the first K.I.A. from Shamokin, who was killed in Vietnam on October 15, 1966, and more than 500 others who died while in service to their country.
