Around 1783, Michael Fulp built this modest stone house on a three-quarters-acre lot he bought from his neighbor John Kerlin, creating a homestead that reflected the lives of local working people in the 18th century rather than the wealth of nearby estate owners. First appearing in the Amity tax rolls in 1773 as a landless single freeman, Fulp served as a private in the local militia during the Revolutionary War in the 5th Company, 5th Battalion commanded by Captain Joseph Sands and mustered from Amity Township. He worked at whatever labor was available, including crop harvesting, grain threshing, hauling dung, haymaking, woodcutting, butchering livestock, and carpentry, sometimes providing for his mother as well as himself. Store and estate records show tools and payments connected to carpentry, and for a decade he also owned and farmed a 40-acre plantation in nearby Douglass Township while renting out the Morlatton house. Though he no longer owned that property when he died in 1808, his standing had risen to that of a yeoman farmer. After his death, George Douglass II added the stone cottage at Morlatton to his holdings, and Fulp was buried on May 14, 1808, at nearby Saint Gabriel's Church. The house originally had two main-floor rooms, an open attic loft, and a cellar beneath one half of the building, with a cooking fireplace and, until the mid-20th century, a stove chimney at the opposite gable end. In the mid-20th century it became commonly known as the bridgekeeper's house, associated in oral tradition with Alice Garber, who was said to sweep the bridge and maintain its lights until its removal in 1951. Acquired by The Historic Preservation Trust of Berks County in 1965 through a gift of the Roy Schurr family, the house underwent extensive repair and restoration in 2010-2011 after repeated flooding from the Schuylkill River, and it survives as a lasting example of the kind of home built by common people in the 18th century.
