The Birthplace of Banking in Greenwood
Industry
9
Banking in Greenwood began here in 1892, when the Bank of Greenwood opened in a brick building built on this site by Grafton Johnson. In 1893 it became the Greenwood Banking Co., and from 1906 to 1930 it was The First National Bank, until the firm moved to the northwest corner of Madison and Main. The building then housed a loan company for more than 40 years. In 1975 it became the property of the National Bank of Greenwood, which had been organized in 1934, when land and buildings on the southwest corner were purchased to expand N.B.G.
